2 points we are still verifying
  • SASSA publishes the same income and asset limits for the War Veteran's Grant as for the Older Person's Grant (R9 350 / R1 584 000), but the Annexure A formula with the R2 420 war veteran's amount would give slightly higher limits. We show SASSA's published figures; confirm with SASSA for war veterans.
  • Annexure A does not say how SASSA rounds a sliding-scale grant. Our estimate rounds down to the nearest rand.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the disability grant in 2026?

R2 400 a month from 1 April 2026, according to the Government Gazette (GN R.7287). SASSA's means test leaflet prints R2 420, but the gazette and the Department of Social Development both say R2 400.

Who can get a disability grant?

Adults aged 18 to 59 who cannot support themselves because of a physical or mental disability, confirmed by a medical or functional assessment, and who pass the means test.

What is a temporary disability grant?

If your disability is expected to last six to twelve months, SASSA may approve the grant for a limited period. It ends when that period expires and you may need a new assessment.

What happens to my disability grant when I turn 60?

The regulations say a disability grant must be converted to an Older Person's Grant as soon as you qualify for it (regulation 25). Contact SASSA if you are unsure.

Can I appeal if my medical assessment says I do not qualify?

Yes. You can ask SASSA to reconsider and appeal to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days of the decision. See our appeals guide.
