Reviews, suspensions and missing payments

What a SASSA review is, why grants get suspended or lapse, and what to do if your money does not arrive on the payment day.

Payment did not arrive

  1. Check the official date for your grant group. Older persons, disability and children's grants are paid on different days, and SASSA sometimes revises a month.
  2. Check whether SASSA asked you to come for a review or certification. Some months have an extra payment day for grants under review.
  3. Make sure your bank account is active and in your name, and that SASSA has your current cellphone number.
  4. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11, WhatsApp 082 054 0016 or GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za, or visit your nearest office with your ID.

Reviews

SASSA reviews grants to confirm you still qualify. In its statement of 29 September 2026 SASSA stressed that a review does not mean your grant is automatically suspended or cancelled. Bring what SASSA asks for; the booklet lists your ID (and your spouse's), proof of marital status, three months' bank statements for all accounts, proof of employment and earnings, proof of address, and for foster grants a valid court order or extension order.

Why grants are suspended

SASSA's booklet lists, among others: not completing a verification or review, changes in marital status, address or finances, an improved financial position, false information, a grant approved in error, fraud, and missing documents. You can appeal a suspension (see appeals).

Why grants lapse

A grant lapses when the beneficiary (or the child) dies, on admission to a state-funded institution, when a temporary disability grant expires, when a child reaches the age limit, if the grant is not claimed within 90 days of approval, or if the beneficiary is outside South Africa for more than 90 days in a row.

Travelling abroad

Tell SASSA before you leave if you will be away for more than 90 days (Social Assistance Act s16). Otherwise SASSA may stop payment and recover money paid while you were away.

Keep SASSA up to date

You must tell SASSA about changes in your income, job, marital status, address, cellphone number, or the child's care arrangements (Social Assistance Act s14(5)). Not doing so is an offence (s21(3)).

Frequently asked questions

Does a review mean my grant will be cancelled?

No. SASSA says a review is not a punishment: it checks that you still qualify. But ignoring a review notice can lead to your grant being suspended.

My grant was suspended. What now?

If it was suspended because you did not complete a review, or because it was not collected for more than three months in a row, SASSA's booklet says you must apply for restoration within 30 days of the suspension. Go to a SASSA office with your ID and the documents SASSA asks for.

Will money in my bank account automatically cancel my grant?

No. SASSA has said that a deposit in your account does not automatically cancel a grant. SASSA must assess whether you still meet the means test.

What is the fourth-day payment?

An extra payment day SASSA has announced in some months, for beneficiaries whose grants were under review or needed certification. Check the month's page for details.
